ABOUT US

We are beef producers, not butchers

How does this set us apart?
We have invested in our beef to ensure it is of the highest quality for our consumers.
We use Meat Standards Australia (MSA) to grade our meat so we can tell end users which cut will suit their cooking method, and ensure a great eating experience.

Our story

Established in 1999, Gippsland Natural is a producer-owned cooperative-style operation, working to maintain a production system flexible enough to supply volume, but small enough to ensure traceability.

We source beef from dedicated group of farmers. We supply direct to select butchers, restaurants, cafes, homes and workplaces.

When you buy Gippsland Natural Beef you are supporting a quality local product with a direct link back to the farm gate. Check out our farmer profiles.

Environmental certification

While many businesses claim to be sustainable, we pioneered an environmental management system (Enviromeat) compliant with ISO 14001.  Our producers have embraced this world-class environmental management system on their farms that assesses the environmental impacts of our farming and guides procedures to manage and reduce these impacts. Find out more.

Our ethos

Gippsland Natural is produced by a group of passionate farmers across the Gippsland region, from Phillip Island to Traralgon and from Neerim South in the hills to Tarwin Lower in South Gippsland. We share a passion and dedication to our produce, from our farms right through to the end consumer, be they leading chefs, discerning home cooks, or parents looking to provide healthy, tasty, grass-fed beef for their kids.

Gippsland Natural was one of Australia’s first producer groups to develop a brand for our beef. While some members have changed over the years, we continue to strive to maintain the connection between the producer and the end user of our produce. We are open to new members joining our group and of course welcome more people to work with and try our produce.

Most of us raise Angus or Angus-cross cattle. Our cattle are grown out to 18-24 months of age and throughout this time are carefully looked after to minimise stress. No hormonal growth promotants are used and cattle graze in a free-range environment. They are not penned up in feedlots at any stage.

Some of our producers are breeders, and others will buy in smaller cattle and feed them out. Some are larger producers and others have smaller properties. All of us are passionate about the environment, animal welfare and, of course, the quality of what we produce.

When the time comes to process the cattle we make sure that stress is minimised at all points. The humane transport and dispatch of our animals is of critical importance to us, and we use the MSA grading system as a means to underpin this.If an animal is stressed at any stage the carcase will fail the MSA grading.

Having a good story from the farm is one thing, but the MSA system gives us certainty that the food that we produce will meet a strict eating quality benchmark every time.

We aim to add value to our beef as best we can by utilising the MSA cut and cooking methods. We now have our own small team of skilled butchers who carefully cut, slice, dice and pack our produce to suit customer requirements.

It is an important part of our process to find a home for every cut in a carcase of beef. In a 300kg carcase there is only 30kg of ‘sweet cuts’, otherwise know as scotch fillet, eye fillet, porterhouse and rump.

As a result we build partnerships with large organisations and commercial kitchens still looking for direct links with the producers and the farms supplying their beef. These partners form a critical part of our community, taking our brand into ready meals, pasta, pies and burgers.
